Launcher Widget Issues

I’ve used a lot of different Android launchers over the years, and even purchased several of them, but I always end up coming back to the stock launcher for one reason or another. Lately, EVERY launcher I try has failed miserably at the same thing: Displaying a 4×4 calendar widget I use very often. If fact, I have even purchased a second calendar app that includes a completely different 4×4 calendar, hoping that it might not actually be the launchers, but the calendar app I was using (Jorte). Well, THAT one has the same issue in every non-stock launcher!

So now I’m very confused as to exactly what causes the issue. All I know is that they both simply work in the stock launcher on my Galaxy SIII. They’re always there when I scroll to that home screen. With every other launcher, after a day (and usually less than that) I scroll to that home screen and I get the “Problem loading widget” error and no calendar. I always have to restart the launcher app to get it working again (on the launchers that DO include a restart option). Has anyone else experienced this issue? I’d be curious to know if it’s just the Galaxy SIII, or if the same issue exists for other phones using non-stock launchers. I had a different phone a year ago, but do you think I can remember if I had this issue then?? Ha! I’m 50 now…I’m prone to a lot of CRS issues.

Anyway, the two apps I use that both include a 4×4 monthly calendar widget are Jorte (free) and Business Calendar (paid). I always configure them to display all of my calendar events as text. On the launchers that allow resizing, I usually stretch the calendar to the edges of the screen to maximize the info displayed on the calendar, but I’ve tried just leaving it the default size as well as making it smaller–the same issue always occurs either way.

New theme might be a keeper!

Wow, I found this theme this morning–“Adventure Journal”, and I really like it!  It displays my collages prominently, and has really cool effects using wood textures, shadows and paper strip effects that I like.  Please excuse the detailed description, I’m just elaborating more because I’m thinking further into the future–when I might change themes again, and people might be confused (including myself) seeing a completely different theme & layout than what I am talking about right now.  I might also want to revisit this theme later, and I tend to forget things easily, what with my “CRS” and all, so this will remind me.

I added 10 different photo collages to the header so far, all but one of them are from our Arizona vacation we took this year.  A random collage is displayed every time you load the webpage.

Yard work and steaks

I spent a few hours working on the yard yesterday evening. I know, that doesn’t sound like me, and you’re right, it’s not. But I needed some time away from the technology, even if only for a few hours. So I grabbed my laptop and portable police scanner and headed out back… Just kidding… No laptop, no scanner, just me and the weeds (and two obnoxious Chihuahuas trying to bark a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower into giving up).

The yard was a bit out of hand. I realized this the other day when I came home from work and found some weeds over 3 feet tall crawling up the side of the house! I swear they popped up overnight, I hadn’t even noticed them before this, and I walk just inches from where they were growing every time I come and go from the house. I managed to rip most of them out by the roots, but some broke off, so I know they’ll be back soon. Time for a chemistry experiment I guess.

I mowed the lawn, then pulled weeds for awhile, and cleaned the back yard. Kevin helped out too, which was nice. After that, we practiced riding his bike for a bit. He seems to be underdeveloped in this area. He’s 6 years old and can’t ride yet. I don’t think he really “gets” it yet, and he’s still trying to grasp the whole pedaling and balancing concepts. But I explained how much more we’ll be able to do–ride to stores and buy toys, ride to McDonalds, ride to the park, and all over the place–and that seemed to help him put forth more effort. He asked if he could get a bag or basket for his bike to hold the stuff we buy, and I explained that first we need to learn to ride, then we’ll work on that stuff.

While I worked in the yard, Sandy cooked an awesome steak dinner on the grill. I can’t remember the kind of steak she said it was (it’s the CRS kicking in again, I’m afraid), but it had string wrapped around it. It was awesome though, very good steak! She also cooked me up an awesome “garbage plate” for a breakfast over the weekend. I told her to write down the recipe because it was very good, but she said she just threw some things together, and didn’t really remember. (she’s probably picking up my CRS through osmosis)

Anyway, I work with all sorts of weird and hazardous chemicals at work all day, and I’ve spilled my share on my hands and have had to scrub them off several times a day. They always look clean when I’m done though. But after working in the yard pulling weeds last night, I can STILL see black dirt embedded in areas of my palms and fingers! How can simple dirt possibly be harder to clean off than the chemicals and indicators from work?!? I was certain that an Iodine stain would be more stubborn to come off than our backyard dirt… I guess I was wrong. Even after all my testing and washing several times at work today I can still see the dirt. That’ll teach me. I’d better stick to repairing and building computers, it’s a lot less damaging to the body parts.

Larinda will be back

As I mentioned in a previous entry, Larinda, one of the awesome ships that visited Kenosha during our Tall Ships Festival this summer, sunk in Hurricane Juan. A fund has been set up to assist in the recovery effort. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. All of the details are on Larinda’s Site.

Ok, Sandy’s turn. She had a sweatshirt made for herself at the same time she had my CRS shirt made. Here’s a picture. I cropped the ole lady out of the picture to give you a better look at the detail. Here comes the frying pan!!

Family News

Sandy told me last night she’d make me breakfast this morning. She does this about once a week or once every two weeks, depending on her schedule. This works out perfectly for me, since I’m not supposed to have a big breakfast very often, per my doctor. Anyway, when she told me I was very surprised. I remembered having a big breakfast just the other day, didn’t I?? She then reminded me that the other day we DIDN’T have breakfast, but she had made supper out of breakfast food (eggs, taters, sausage, onions, hot peppers, etc…

I was shocked. Even when she mentioned it, I remembered the meal, but didn’t even recall that it was supper and not breakfast! Are my days THAT mixed together now that I’ve been unemployed for so long, that I can’t even tell one PART of a day from another?? I think it’s the CRS, myself. I’ve had it for quite some time. I think I began suffering from it shortly after I met Sandy. Not that she CAUSED it, it was probably just a coincidence. For those wondering what CRS is, to put it “nicely” let’s just say it stands for “Can’t Remember Stuff.”

Fortunately, Sandy–my friend/lover/wife/right-hand/ball-and-chain/confidant/old lady/secretary/etc./etc.–is very understanding and forgiving. Or maybe because she’s an aide she just knows how to deal with people with disabilities… Anyway, she always straightens me out on these things so I can still function adequately in society, have a good breakfast now and then, keep all of my appointments, and still remember what day it is. Now if I could only fit her in my pocket, like today’s technology…
