Translation needed

While looking for a job in the Kenosha News recently I ran across this ad:

ClassifiedAd (8k image)

Could someone please translate this for me? It’s like the smallest ad you could possibly have, yet nearly every word is spelled wrong (or should I say “spelt rong?”). I wonder if the ad was actually submitted this way and published verbatim, or if there’s just some illiterate ad copy employee working at Kenosha News… Hmmm… Which place should I send my resume to? I think I’d have better odds sending it to Kenosha News… my guess would be that even the number of the address is wrong in the ad, and it seems Kenosha News could certainly use a new Copy Editor…

Party & Parade

We had my 40th birthday bash Saturday.  Sandy threw a great party, made lots of great food, and everyone had a great time.  I think I had a few too many wine coolers myself, because I ended up with a splitting headache.  My bad leg was also a bit sore from all the walking around throughout the day, but that was expected.  The surprise “giveaway” sale at Bear’s neighbor’s house was a nice bonus. I think EVERYONE ended up taking a gift or two home from the party! Kevin was cute–as we left the neighbor’s house with a bunch of toys for him he said “Daddy, can I get some more toys at the NEXT house??”

Today was the Kenosha Civic Veteran’s Parade.  We watched from our usual spot on 60th Street and Sheridan Road at First United Methodist Church.  We sit there because they have a Strawberry Festival at the church the same day, and we love the brats, hotdogs and strawberries and ice cream!  It makes a great lunch, and then we’re early enough for decent seats when the parade starts.  The parade was pretty nice and I took over 140 pictures.  I’ll post them soon for everyone to see, as well as the photos from our trip to the Circus this week.

It’s a done deal

I’m finished. My career at CirQon ended at around 11:00am this morning. I was dismissed. I, along with a few other remaining co-workers, stood around the office and watched in shock as the movers carted away the desks, cabinets and chairs that were once part of our home away from home. They were amazingly swift today, as if the end of the day today was some sort of deadline and they just realized they were out of time. The other four days of the week were very quiet in the building and all of a sudden it was bustling with movers in nearly every department at once!

As a few co-workers and I waited for our “walking papers” we watched them clearing each room and moving on to the next. We even had to switch to different rooms to wait in because the furniture was being moved out all around us most of the time!

If you’re not bored to death by this yet, read on for some photo highlights…

Wow, are these exciting. Take a look.

BootDisk (23k image)

This was my Weapon of Mass Destruction for the past two weeks. I think I reformatted about 40 hard drives containing a total of around 175GB of information before carting each one out to the dock to be loaded onto a tractor-trailer.

NoServers (60k image)

This is where the two servers were that sat next to me for years. Mark Stricklin, my former supervisor, added the countertop. It was attached to a desk on the left, and held up on the right by a fire safe. Mark got out of IT and went into politics and construction over a year ago. He was smart enough to get out before he was forced to…

LastWorkstation (66k image)

There it is. My lonely workstation before I was told to pack it up and move it out early this morning. The screen and keyboard at left aren’t attached to a computer–they were key conspirators in my use of the aforementioned Weapon of Mass Destruction… I would wheel each computer in on a gurney, hook up the IV’s (keyboard, mouse, monitor), and then procedure to fry all of it’s data. Can I be indicted for war crimes?

I have more photos of more empty rooms, empty shelves, and nothingness, but this is getting too depressing. Time to move on….

Ghost Ship

It’s eerie (eery?) here. Each morning when I come in to work it sounds a little quieter. Less whirring of machines. Fewer hard drives spinning. Less fans keeping things cool. Emptier offices. What once was an active manufacturing plant buzzing with activity and production has been reduced to a quiet, empty shell of a building. Even the two network servers that lived and worked right beside me each day for years are now gone, moved to a server closet with the rest of the network hardware. It’s depressing. All that remains in my cubicle are empty shelves, 2 empty desks, an empty fire safe, and my workstation in the corner. I’m afraid if I’m not alert enough or take too long of a break one day this week I’ll return to find my own workstation has been packed up and shipped out! All good things must come to an end, as they say… or as I like to say: “Working at CirQon has been swell… but the swelling is going down now…”

Stairmaster Swimming

Kev and I went swimming last night. Rec-Plex is amazingly uncrowded this time of year. Everyone must be doing outdoor activities instead. It was good to get back to it though. We love swimming, so I always try to go at least a few times a week but with the leg problems I’ve been having, the swims have been few and far between. The leg is looking almost completely normal now, and feels pretty good.

Kevin and I did 4 trips down the huge waterslide, which was no easy accomplishment (for me, anyway). It’s like a giant stairmaster, then a 15-second looping slide back to the bottom. It didn’t phase Kevin though, he was ready to go several more times if I had let him.

And check out my new toy… Briggs and Stratton engine… right outta Tool Time! Arrr arrrr arrrrr.

1 down, 1 to go

Sandy’s last day of work was yesterday. It was the last day for many employees of our company, so the employees threw a nice potluck lunch. Everyone was thoroughly stuffed after lunch, and there were a lot of sad goodbyes, handshaking, and hugs. Hopefully it’s on to bigger and better things for everyone. I also received my notice yesterday, so I’ll be done next Friday myself.

Fed up!

Ok, now I’ve had it. My allergic reaction is now reoccuring, just as my original infection reoccured before it. I’m caught in some sort of loop here. I saw the doctor today and he stopped the antibiotics. Turns out I’m PROBABLY allergic to all of them I guess. So now I’m on Benadryl to treat the allergic reaction and I’m off the antibiotics completely. The doctor says if the infection comes back go back to the ER. (And I imagine we’ll repeat this whole scenario once again–Why does it feel like I’m my own personal version of the movie “Groundhog Day?”) Hopefully the infection is dead enough for my body to continue to fight it, otherwise I’m screwed. The doctor said even if he sends me to a specialist, the specialist will just prescribe more antibiotics… Sheesh.

He said most people who get an infection can get rid of it in a few weeks, but since my circulation in my legs is so bad it takes ME months instead. He suggested some foot exercises to increase circulation, and lots of elevation of the leg. I sure need to do SOMETHING different, that’s for sure. Guess it’s time to start doing the treadmill again and take off some weight.

Spam Test

As I understand it, spambots (not to be confused with SPYbot) automatically scan all HTML pages on the web and harvest e-mail addresses. I’d like to test this theory and see if it works. Since these blog entries are stored as html files, all I should have to do is refer to TheSpamminator@jimtrottier.com or someone familiar like Cletus@jimtrottier.com or maybe Zoltan@jimtrottier.com or CaveDweller@jimtrottier.com and then just sit back and see what happens. I have already setup a “catchall” mailbox to grab all the mail sent to my domain that isn’t directed to a real mailbox, so we’ll see what happens and how long it takes. It should be interesting to see the types of ads too, so I’ll post stats when they start arriving. I’m expecting Winkie enlargements and Viagra ads to be the winners though…

Happy Father’s Day!

Sandy and Kevin took me out to breakfast this morning, and Sandy’s cookin’ out right now for supper… Got some Cajun Sausages for me! =) Kev and I went to see Nemo yesterday. That was pretty cool! See my “30-second” review in our Forums for more information. Other than that, the leg seems to be healing well, a lot of the pain has gone now…and seems to have been replaced with a boatload of ITCHING! I just try to keep it coated in moisturizer and anti-itch cream, and that seems to help a lot.

What’s up, Doc?

My doctor didn’t have much to say during yesterday’s visit. “Well, it looks better…” was about it. He gave me another week of antibiotics and some pain pills and said if it doesn’t clear up this time we’ll have to take some x-rays. He said that last time too, and I thought it DID clear up, but it came back anyway. I have to see him again in a week. We’re just a bit concerned with the timing. We’ll be out of work a couple weeks, and we had hoped to be done with the whole mess by then but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Well, Sandy got her notice this morning. Next Friday is her last day of work. 😦 Here it comes…

The Infection: Reloaded

I’m back. I just got out of the hospital after battling a leg infection for the second time. The first time it hit was in April. It cleared up completely (or so I thought) after a nasty allergic reaction to one of the antibiotics caused me to be down for several more days covered in hives. All that remained at the end of it was one leg looking slightly darker than the other one, and I had a sore foot. Since the weather hasn’t been all the great I began thinking there just might be something to those nutballs that say they can tell bad weather’s coming because some part of their body or another is aching. I just dropped that idea. Read on if you’re not bored to death yet…

EXTENDED BODY:
On Friday I had a computer job in Racine after my full-time job. On my way there I began getting the chills. It felt like the flu again, just as it did last time when you found the infection. I was a bit concerned. I kept it together and completed the job then went home. That night I kept going from having the chills to being so hot I was dripping with sweat. I got very little sleep, and repeatedly made the trek from my bed under an electric blanket to the living room by the air conditioner. My fever hit 103F at one point.

Saturday we had plans to attend the Outta Site Kite Flight at Kennedy Park. Kevin was very excited about it and I was feeling a little better. My temp was down to 99 that morning, so I decided to go. Sandy, Kevin and I had a nice time (there’ll be photos posted soon), and stayed for a couple hours before I was feeling kinda weak again. I kept checking my previously-infected leg for signs of the infection recurring, but didn’t see any changes. I had about the same problem Saturday night as I did Friday–hot, cold, hot, cold… and by Sunday morning I was fed up. I checked my leg again and sure enough, the redness was returning. It was back. Interestingly though–my foot that had been sore ever since the first infection cleared up–now felt completely NORMAL! Now I was REALLY confused. But I knew for sure the infection was back, so as soon as Sandy got up I said I needed to go to the ER again.

At the ER everything got really complicated. We had none of the names of my previous meds that I had the reaction to and also didn’t bring any names for the current meds I’m taking! I was scolded severely and told to keep a list of my meds and allergies on me at all times. sad We muddled through it though, and they soon had me on a different and much more potent IV antibiotic called “Vancomycin” . During this initial IV the doctor came in and said they wanted to admit me for 24 hours for observation and to make sure they get the infection headed in the opposite direction before letting me go home.

I had thought we’d be out in a few hours and could then follow up on Monday with my regular doctor. WRONG. They didn’t want a reoccurrence again (and neither did we) so I was admitted. What fun that was. It was supposed to be a “24 hour observation”. After my doctor saw me on Monday afternoon he wanted me to stay “at least a few more days” longer. Sandy and I talked him down to 1 day longer with much rest and leg elevation at home, and outpatient IVs of the fabulous Vancomycin along with a pile of colorful pills to load up my one-week compartmentalized pillbox at home.

I’m home now, taking it easy when I can. There’s always so much more to do when you can’t do anything than there is to do when you can, if that makes any sense… It’s good to be home though. Back to a comfortable bed, and no one waking me up every 2 hours for vitals and blood samples… Now I know how Neo felt after extraction from the pod with all those needles stuck in him!

I’m back to work, although I’m restricted to sit-down work, and thanks to some very attentive co-workers “monitoring” me I can’t even get up to go to the bathroom without getting scolded. But they’re just trying to help, and I do appreciate it. Everyone cares, and that gives me a very warm feeling. (It’ll make it that much more difficult to leave in a couple weeks when the plant closes though).

And back to the nutball theory of feeling pain when it’s going to rain: After Infection #1 my foot seemed to be more sore when it rained. Interestingly, however, the day Infection #2 kicked in (that Saturday) the soreness in that foot disappeared completely! It was as if a chunk of dormant infection was stored in my foot and finally broke loose, spreading through my leg again! The foot pain was gone, but the leg was now returning to it’s reddened, infected state. The good. The bad. The VERY ugly…

And if you ever have to make a stay in the hospital, be sure to note the proximity of your bed to the AC vent on the ceiling. It’s a horrible idea to place the bed directly below that vent (Thank you St. Catherine’s). I spent the weekend thinking I was STILL getting the chills every couple hours from the infection.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with a commercial. Fill it in with your own visuals:

Water bowl for 2 Chihuahuas to drink out of: 78 cents.

Water to fill the bowl: 3 cents.

ReadyMop used to clean up the puddle of dog pee you step in: $39.99.

Medical bills & medications for treatment of resulting leg infection you get: $4,345.

Not having to pee into a bottle and poop in a bedpan from a hospital bed……. PRICELESS!

Chihuahuas: 4 out of 5 dog lovers choose them over other leading brands…for their pea-sized brains and basketball-sized bladders!

Interesting question

I heard this and thought “hmm, this is one of those stupid questions, yet an interesting one.” here it is: “Why does Hawaii have interstates?” Don’t interstates connected multi states together? Why are they interstates and not highways?

I know, its like one of those questions of why can’t we drive on a driveway, but we can drive on a parkway, yet we can’t park on a parkway!

My Writing Career

Ok, so now I’m supposed to go into journalism… C’mon, it’s just a “man’s diary” really… Just a place to vent in an effort to help me maintain my blazing 35wpm typing speed. But thanks though… If it ends up getting me some sort of technical writing position it’ll make it all worth that much more. I’ll use my Blog as my resume, since it’s about the only example I have of my writing abilities, with the exception of the website itself. I appreciate everyone’s comments lately though. It’s a relief to find people actually stopping by to read them finally! It’s very encouraging, and it’ll keep me posting more and more of them.

Some walls are actually being torn down in the building today… It’s the end of an era. Oh well. No runs, no hits, no eras. We shoulda used a corked bat!

The Party’s Over

I got my awesome birthday gift from work yesterday–$5 in McDonald’s Gift Certificates! WooHoo! Can’t wait to see what toy will come with my Happy Meal!! rolls eyes Hey, maybe this is my chance to get a foot in the door though–I can submit my resume to Ronald, and see if he has any openings for a good IT guy… Think there’s a market for a digitally-enhanced Big Mac? Or maybe some “binary” fries–in the shapes of zeros and ones? Oh wait, the zeros would be onion rings–I forgot, McDonald’s doesn’t make those… sad

Nothing else exciting going on this week..YET… We’re going to the Outta Site Kite Flight this weekend though, as well as going to see Finding Nemo, so we should have a great weekend. Read the rest of this posting to find out what movies I’ve been watching lately…
Some movies I’ve watched recently, and my star ratings:

Insomnia: 3.5 stars – Al Pacino.

A Time To Kill: 3 stars – Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson.

The Time Machine: 2 stars – Pretty hokey, but great special effects.

The rest of this week I’ll be watching: Catch Me If You Can, The Recruit, and probably a few others.

On the other side

Well, I’m over the hill.  Or so they say.  That’s all I’ve been hearing all day long.  Over the hill over the hill over the hill.   Everyone got a kick out of picking on me though, so I’m glad they had fun with it.  Pretty tricky how they managed to coax me out of my cubicle for a so-called “broken scanner” just so they could sneak in the enourmous “40” balloons… and even more interesting is trying to get all those balloons stuffed into the back of a PT Cruiser to take them home… I had to pick up Kevin in the Neon…he wouldn’t fit in the cruiser with the balloons!

Nice Weekend

Tonight brings to a close a very nice weekend for us.  On Friday evening we had <a href=”http://www.jimtrottier.com/PhotoAlbums/Matt_and_Scott/image008.htm”>Matt’s Graduation</a>, we had dinner at <a href=”http://www.cityonthelake.com/profiles/1516.asp”>King Buffet</a> Saturday evening, and this afternoon we had a <a href=”http://www.jimtrottier.com/PhotoAlbums/Matt_and_Scott/index.htm”>get-together at Mike and Ginger’s</a> to see Scott while he’s home on leave from the Navy.

I also received a nice birthday gift from Pam and Louie, and a nice birthday card from Jayson and his family.  Thanks guys! =)

Pajama Party

Kevin has a Pajama Party at school today.  He was so confused this morning when I got him up and we got dressed in another pair of pajamas.  The confusion quickly turned to excitement as he realized he gets to go to school in his jammies.  He had to wear his regular shoes to get to school, but we packed his Taz slippers in his backpack so he can switch to them when he gets to school.

Well, one more day on the dinosaur auction.  So far we’re still winning, but someone just bid $1 less than my maximum bid.  My guess is that now they’ll wait until just before the auction ends tomorrow morning, and then they’ll outbid me by 50 cents or $1 and take it from me.

Swimming and Nemo

Kev and I went swimming last night at Rec-Plex.  Three hikes to the top of the waterslide, 10 laps in the current channel (against the current) and a 15-minute hot tub and I was beat.  Kev just wanted to keep going and going though. Afterward I offered Kevin a reward for good behavior.  He wanted a Nemo fish.  He said he saw them at the store Clayton took him to the other day when my dad watched him.  Couldn’t remember the name of the store though.  After a few minutes of driving he said “The store with the big “K” like MY name!” I said “K-Mart?” and he said “Yeah, that’s it, K-Mart!” So I went that way.  As I drove into the K-Mart parking lot he said “No, it’s not THAT store, it’s BY that store.” and he looked all around until it hit him–two big stores down he spotted Wal-Mart and said “THERE! THAT’S the store!” I told him “That’s Wal-Mart.” so he’d remember it.  He knew for sure that was the store, so we went there.  We found the Nemo toys quickly.  He really wanted a talking one, but I didn’t have that much on me.  He settled for one almost the same size (close to a foot long) that didn’t talk, just a stuffed plush fish.  It’s the orange one from the movie–Nemo himself. Kevin calls him Diddley Squat though, from the TV commercial he’s seen about a thousand times.

Powder!

The top story on the Channel 7 news last night was from Kenosha–Two mysterious envelopes containing a green powder were mailed to the Kenosha Chamber of Commerce and the Kenosha Municipal Building.   Both buildings were evacuated and the FBI was called in to investigate.  As of this morning the buildings are still closed.
