Quest for Cages

Ok, we’re having some difficulty finding the cages without paying a FORTUNE! (Petco).  We checked several stores yesterday and we’re going back out today. Thanks for all the input everyone! I’ll make sure I post something pretty much daily… maybe it’ll even increase my site traffic. Oh, and for those who think they’re having trouble adding comments: After you “Post It” and go back to read it on the site–if it’s not there, it’s because you’re seeing the old cached page in your browser. Press F5 to refresh the page and there it is!

Update on dogs

We’ve decided after some outside input to get two small cages for the dogs, lock them up separately when we’re not home, with just a little water each, and then let them outside as soon as we get home to go to the bathroom.  We’re also removing all housetraining pads from the house to force them to go outside.  Hope this works…

Psycho Chihuahuas

Our two Chihuahuas, Peanut and Socks, have been developing some bad behavior lately.  Socks, and recently Peanut too, has been shredding many household items when we’re not at home.  They both also shred Kleenex, but they do this even when we ARE home, and sometimes right in front of us!  But we’ve come home and found many things, including photos, magazines, books, game controllers, Matt’s X-Box Live headset, CDs, and most-recently several DVDs, shredded to pieces!  This last incident pushed us to take immediate action, so I cleaned out the small bathroom in the basement we rarely used, put in a food and water dish and a pad, and now when we leave the house the dogs stay in there.  That was last Friday.  So far they’ve already pulled up most of the carpet in the bathroom, shredded the foam padding under it, and scratched the bottom of the door to shreds.  They haven’t gotten out though, so we’re not too concerned.  We expected some damage though, so that’s not a shock.

They’ve also taken to “marking” everything in the house! Chairs, couches, doors, etc. etc., leaving us to have to clean, scrub, mop and sanitize everything over and over again.  We tried some Hartz “Stay-off” spray on many areas, but it doesn’t phase them except for a few sneezes.

If anyone has any ideas about how to make the behavior stop (without a huge cash outlay) we’d really appreciate it.  We plan on getting both of them neutered eventually, and we’ve heard this can help with the behavior problems, but we’ve also heard other people that say it didn’t help with anything when they had it done to their dogs.  If you have any ideas please add a comment to this posting or e-mail jim@jimtrottier.com.

What’s up with our legs?

Gee, almost missed getting ANY news posted this month! Well, Sandy’s been struggling with a partially fractured/sprained ankle this month.  The doctor said it’s an common injury where the muscle, when pulled can tear off a small piece of bone from the ankle, resulting in sort of a break/sprian.  She didn’t require a full cast on the foot, but she now has a removable supportive “boot” she has to wear for 4-6 weeks, and a smaller brace she can also wear to lessen the pain.  She’s getting around though, and still working her butt off to get things wrapped up at CirQon.

I’m also struggling with a leg problem this month.  A few weeks ago one evening I started feeling weak all over and was running a fever.  I figured it was the flu, so I rested that night.  The next day it was worse.  Sandy kept checking my temperature and it kept rising.  At just over 104F we decided I’d better take a cold shower to cool down.  Upon removing my pants I discovered my entire lower right leg from my knee to my ankle was bright red and swollen!  Sandy called the doctor for me (the next day–I wanted to wait and see if it got better on its own) and the doctor told us to go to the emergency room immediately, and said I could die.  We did, and I was put on IVs immediately and told it was an infection, most-likely from bacteria getting in through my foot.  (I’ve had problems with my feet since I burned both of them on hot sand when I was younger).  After a few hours of IVs and medication, I was sent home.  I saw my doctor a couple days later and he didn’t like the looks of it.  For an entire week, once per day he had me get an IV of antibiotics from the hospital, as well as prescribing an antibiotic pill and pain medication.  The week went fairly well, and the leg started getting better.  I took the week off of work, per Doctor’s orders and kept it elevated a lot.

At the end of that week I woke up with a rash.  It was worst around my right knee, just above the infection, but it covered my entire body and itched like crazy.  We called the doctor, and they said it was probably an allergic reaction to the antibiotics, and I made an appointment to see the doctor again following day.  By that time the rash was worse, and boy was I itching!  After the examination the doctor confirmed the allergic reaction and switched me to another antibiotic and an allergy pill to help with the reaction effects.  At this point the infection is much better, now down to only a small remaining red area on my leg, and the rash is almost completely gone.  I feel much better, with just a slightly sore leg at this point.  The doctor said they can’t be sure if I’m allergic to the IV antibiotic or the oral antibiotic I had been taking though.  I’d have to go see an allergist to narrow that down.

But I’m getting better, and it feels good.  Now all we have to worry about is our jobs–It looks like at the end of June/Early July we’ll both be unemployed at this point.  That’s the latest we’ve heard so far.  I’m continuing to seek out interesting computer job prospects, and Sandy’s probably just going to pick up whatever extra hours she can get from her Society’s Assets job and leave it at that.

GreyMatter is Back!

In The Beginning… The WebMaster created Adam (Coleco)… And It Was Good.  Adam had GreyMatter. GreyMatter Was Good… And now I do too.  Well, I’ve always had grey matter, but now I have GreyMatter!

I’ve taken to using Greymatter for our Family News section.  As a few of you jimtrottier.com diehards might remember, I had it once before, but gave it up for some reason I can’t remember.  But it’s back now, and better than ever!  It’s the same GreyMatter, but I’ve tweaked it a bit, applied mods here and there for various features I like, and also learned how to connect it directly to the jimtrottier.com home page!  So you’ll find the very latest posting displayed at the top of our main page, along with a list of the most-recent postings to-date, so you can just click on any of those to catch up on anything you might have missed in the past.  Not that anything on here is important… It’ll waste all of your time just like every other website out there… But I hope you like it and come visit often anyway.

I’ve already learned a lot more about GreyMatter than I knew when I tried it the first time, and after seeing just how nice it can work with a little effort, I think it’s here to stay.  So let the Blogging Begin!!

Death of a PC

Our Micron PIII-850 died last night.  Funeral arrangements are pending.   I used it for awhile when I got home from my computer job and it was fine.  A while later, just before bed I went to turn off the computers and this one’s screen was blank and the monitor was in power save mode!  The power was still on, so I immediately became concerned.

I turned it off and on several times and couldn’t even get the CMOS beep! (that confirms that the initial hardware checks are ok)  I knew something was fried.  I took off the case cover and was shocked at the amount of dust buildup.  It was really bad.  I used our Shark handvac to suck it out just to SEE the components! Sheesh, we have a dusty house! Anyway, I then turned on the power to boot up again. Guess what…. BOTH the processor fan AND the case fan were dead.  No movement at all.  This results in the processor overheating and melting. Wonderful.

Interestingly though, the processor fan does spin about a 1/4 of a revolution instantly when I turn the power OFF.  This leads me to believe that there’s a slight possibility that there’s a POWER problem, and maybe the 2 fans and processor simply aren’t getting ANY power any more.  So I am going to dissect the computer in my spare time to find out more about what happened.

As for recovering my lost data–I didn’t lose a thing!! This was the first time EVER that I was fully prepared and able to recover from a computer disaster with no loss of data!  About a year ago I started using the storage technique of keeping all of my user data on a second physical hard drive on each computer.  I made sure my e-mail was all there, address books, Quicken data, all photos and images, and basically everything that could possibly change from day to day.  I even use TweakUI for Windows XP and modified all of my “Special Folders” to point to the D drive instead of the C drive.  This works really well, and sure saved my butt this time!  I just took out the second hard drive and installed it in my newer 2.2GHz Pentium 4 machine.  It worked like a charm, and I was even able to easily re-assign the drive letter from it’s default to what it was on my home network (‘M’ for Micron) which really helped with many applications that will still be looking to the M drive for certain documents (i.e. Quicken).  XP does this nicely.

So right now I’m limping along on a mere 3-computer LAN at home while I try to figure out what to do next–restore this Micron or get a new huge hard drive for backups and put it in one of the two machines that still have an open hard drive bay.

Kevin’s 5th Birthday

We celebrated Kevin’s 5th Birthday last week! We took lots of photos, so be sure and check them out.  On Wednesday (his actual birthday) we took Kevin to Chuck E. Cheese’s in Racine.  He had a blast!  We went in mid-afternoon, so the place was pretty much deserted and he had pretty much everything to himself for a while!  We got a pretty nice “simulated” pencil drawing from one of the machines, had pizza and soda, and played on the games and in the tubes.  He bought a Chuck E. Cheese Hot Wheels tractor-trailer and a small water-filled toy with all the tickets he won from the games.

On Saturday we had his Scooby-Doo-themed birthday party at Grandpa Trottier’s house.  We had a ton of pizzas, cake and ice cream, and then Kevin opened his gifts.  It soon switched from a Scooby party to a Spongebob party though!  He got a Spongebob chair, Spongebob Pants and Shirt outfit, 2 talking Spongebob dolls, a bucket of Spongebob bath toys, and the latest Spongebob DVD (that makes 3 we have now).  He also got a few Bob The Builder toys as well, all of which he’s having a blast with!  Even Kev’s  girlfriend Marissa was there, so he had a really good time playing and celebrating.

Pam, Louie, Socks, Peanut, and Kevin

Pam & Louie treated us to Brunch and a play yesterday! It was Funny Girl at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort.  The food and the play were both excellent!  Kevin spent the day with Uncle Bear while we went out.

Socks and Peanut are doing fine.  Socks is close to Peanut’s size now, and Peanut seems to stay about the same size, as far as we can tell.  He might be getting fatter, but that’s about it.  Socks is still a puppy and getting into everything. Very bold too. He’ll steal a Kleenex sitting right next to you if you look away!  And how he can jump like a rabbit and walk around in his hind legs, so he’s always jumping up on our bed and finding ways onto the dining room table to steal things.  That’s a trick we haven’t witnessed yet, but we know he’s doing it because we find things from the table out on the living room floor occasionally.  Now we turn the dining room chairs around when we leave the house to prevent it.  The chair by the computer also requires moving, since we caught him with a couple CDs recently too.  He’s a little scavenger, that’s for sure.  Hopefully he’ll grow out of that phase soon.  Peanut doesn’t get into things any more.  The only problem we have with him now is his constant territorial marking!  Anything that doesn’t smell like him yet is a potential target for him to squirt, it seems!  And this includes Socks!  Can you say “Smelly Dog?”  (Must be the sequel to Phoebe’s song “Smelly Cat”…)

Kevin’s 5th birthday is only 15 days away! He’s very excited about it.  We printed the invitations last week and they’re being mailed out this week.  He sure is growing fast.

Holidaze

The holidaze are (is?) over.  Ours was very nice.  The kids got a lot of toys, and we did a lot of visiting and celebrating with relatives.   It was a very pleasant season, actually.  We visited Christmas Lane and the Christmas Train a few times and took lots of pictures.  We did Christmas Eve per our tradition, at Mike & Ginger’s and Grandpa Trottier’s, back-to-back, and picked up Matt that evening for his Christmas vacation time with us.  Matt and I (Matt, mostly) did a lot of “X-Boxing” and “PS2ing” as well, since we got a few awesome new games for Christmas, including X-Box Live!  So we’ve also been playing MechAssault and Unreal Championship with other X-Box players around the globe! It sure adds a new dimension to console gaming, that’s for sure!

Sandy’s been making Smoothies with her new Smoothie Machine and making us Pizzas with her new Pizzazz Pizza cooker.  Kevin’s been playing with his new cars, games, and with the McDonalds Franchise he purchased with his Christmas money!  I’ve been watching a ton of new DVDs that ALL of us got, and playing ATV Offroad Fury 2 and GTA Vice City, which I got for Christmas.  It’s been a very “electric” season, I guess.

Post-Christmas update

Well, ten days left to Christmas!  Saturday we put up the tree (took all but 5 minutes).  It’s a 3-piece pre-lit tree we bought last year.  By far the easiest setup I’ve ever gone through.  Anyway, Sandy and Kevin decorated it and hung up the ornaments after I put it up.  Saturday evening we went out to dinner at King Buffet, our favorite Chinese buffet restaurant, and then we took Kevin to see Santa at Regency Mall in Racine.  Sunday (today) Kevin and I cleaned his room and Sandy wrapped a ton of presents.  Oh, and I burned my first successful home movie onto a DVD-R disc today!  It came out really nice.  Unfortunately I just learned that only a few select DVD players can actually PLAY a DVD-R disc… Hopefully this ability will improve in the future.  For now though I can play them on the computer just fine, but neither of our two DVD players digested the DVD very well.  They play a good portion of it fine, but about two-thirds of the way through they choke and start acting very erratic.  I checked the internet, and it’s a common problem with DVD-R discs, so there’s really nothing wrong except incompatibility.

Enjoying the Christmas season

Kevin had a nice Advent program at church tonight. He sang with the other 3 and 4 year olds. Afterward we went to see Christmas Lane and all the wonderful Christmas decorations, and then stopped at the Christmas Train house close to Christmas Lane. It was amazing, as it is every year! Santa was there tonight, talking to the kids and handing out little gifts for the kids. They also had hot chocolate, hot apple cider, snacks and cookies. The train set is a major attraction in Kenosha this time of year, and tonight was no exception. It was a very crowded street tonight, probably because Santa was there. The trains take up this guy’s entire front yard and backyard, and the tracks run throughout, and the trains even travel from the front yard to the backyard! There are a few photos in our albums, but we plan to take a bunch more during the daytime this year to give everyone a good idea of how amazing this setup really is, and to help get the word out and attract even more people! So stay tuned, we should have a new album up soon. Meanwhile, we’ve just posted the pictures from Kevin and his class’s field trip to the Jelly Belly Warehouse, so take a look at those when you get a chance.

Lost Peanut

Here’s a long story. It’s a true story, and we’ll say it ended a few hours ago… or at least the CHAPTER ended a few hours ago…Anyway, here goes. Saturday (11/2/02) we needed to take a run to Sam’s Club in Racine to pick up some groceries. My dad also wanted a few things, so we thought we’d pick them up for him, and because he has a new Chihuahua puppy (“Tiny”) we thought it would be nice to have him dog-sit for awhile so Peanut and Tiny could play together while we went shopping.

I called my dad and asked if he would watch Peanut and he agreed. We left Saturday afternoon after dropping Peanut off at my dad’s and went shopping. We got the usual bulk stuff, nothing special, then stopped at Best Buy for some CD-R discs. After that we headed home. It was close to 6:00pm, so we were anxious to get my dad’s, pick up Peanut, and go home and eat. When we pulled into my dad’s driveway at 6:00pm, we found him and my brother Clayton looking around the yard. They said Peanut had just snuck out “or something”. The kids were talking at the door, with the door wide open, and they assumed he got out, because he was nowhere in the house to be found. My dad said he was crying for me ever since we left (as he always does), and was only out of sight for a minute or two when he disappeared. No one saw him sneak out though, so we really had no idea whether he was stuck somewhere in the house, outside, or running home, or just running scared outdoors!

We searched the house, the yard, and a few blocks in every direction, but nothing. After several hours of searching we gave up exhausted and went home. My dad kept watch, and went out and looked around every so often. We were home a couple hours, everyone was very upset, crying, wondering if we should be mourning, still looking, or if maybe someone had walked off with him intending to keep him as their own. We know how special Chihuahuas are. They’re rare and expensive, and if someone found a nice one like Peanut they might just decide to keep him. He had tags–His rabies tag and ID tag which included his name, address, and phone number, so we had that going for us. After a few hours sitting around thinking I told Sandy I just couldn’t sit here when he could be out there somewhere freezing to death. It was a very cold night, and had to be below freezing. I went back to my dad’s and searched the neighborhood some more. Walking and searching in the cold, hundreds of possible scenarios went through my head. The worst of which was the fact that it was much too cold out for ANY dog to survive tonight in this freezing weather, let alone a PUPPY, and a Chihuahua for that matter! I searched a few more hours, until my feet were sore and hands numb from the cold. I went home depressed again, sure that there was no way he would be found alive after tonight IF he was out there somewhere.

I didn’t sleep much Saturday night, and I don’t think Sandy did either. I tried, but kept hearing Peanut’s whining or his tags jingling once in awhile and I’d jump up, check the front and back doors, and then try to go back to bed. I had left the back gate open, just in case. They say you never know…dog’s can find their way home even when it’s miles away. My dad lives only 9 blocks down the street, but for a Chihuahua it would have to seem like miles and miles, but I still harbored a glimmer of hope.

Sunday morning I searched again and turned up nothing. We had a birthday party for Jonathon Parr (he turned 4) at my sister Penny’s house that afternoon. My dad was there, and said a couple boys said they saw Peanut in the neighborhood just before my dad left for the party. My dad searched the area 1/2 block from his house where the kids said they saw him, but he turned up nothing. This new information gave us a little more hope, but we also knew that some kids can be cruel, or mistaken, or maybe they saw a cat or a different stray, it could have been a lot of things or even nothing at all. I couldn’t just let it go yet though, so after the party we drove around the neighborhood again and turned up nothing. We spent the evening at home again with everyone upset once again. The house just seems so empty without a dog in it now. Even when we got our first dog, Jayka, Carrie mentioned when she was first over to see him that our house seemed “so different” now that we had a dog. I now know what she meant. That evening I composed a classified ad for the Lost & Found section of the Kenosha News. I called them and they took the ad and said it’d have to start in Tuesday’s paper. I e-mailed them a photo as well, to run along with the ad. We sat around at home with everyone sad and depressed again, no one ate very well since the night before, and then it was time to take Matt home. Matt and I went, and Sandy stayed home to put Kevin down for the night. It was an incredibly quiet ride, for obvious reasons. About 5 times Matt broke the silence with the same sentence: “I sure hope we find Peanut.” I said nothing in reply. I didn’t know what was best to tell him–“Yes, he’ll turn up”, or “Don’t get your hopes up”, or “I don’t know”, so I said nothing. I was thinking about a classified ad I saw in the paper when I was looking for a sample in the Lost & Found section to layout my ad similarly. The ad was in the FOR SALE section. It was a litter of 3 Chihuahuas that was for sale. $300 each. About what we had figured, having priced them on the internet before and looked at prices when we were looking for a dog before we got Peanut. I was thinking if we had another dog it’d start the healing process and at least take the kids’ minds off of losing Peanut. My dad had said he felt responsible for losing our dog, and said he’d pay for us to get a new one. After dropping Matt off and thinking it over some more I called my dad on the way home. I asked if he meant it, and he said yes. I told him it’ll cost $300. He was shocked, and said he didn’t have that kind of money. I agreed. I thought about it some more and then asked if he’d pay half. He said sure, that’s fine.

I talked it over with Sandy when I got home and she agreed, maybe it’ll help. We knew it might be too soon to replace Peanut, but thought what the best (or “worst?”) outcome might be: We might end up with TWO Chihuahuas! I called immediately about the dogs in the paper. Two of the three were already sold. We knew they would go fast, it’s rare to even SEE Chihuahuas for sale, especially Chihuahua puppies. He said they had one male left. He’s in perfect health, was checked by a vet recently, and he’s a purebred. I took the digital camera, intending to take a few photos of him and bring them back to show Sandy. When I saw him though, I fell in love and knew Sandy would too. The other two Chihuahuas were still there, but were sold. He showed those to me, just so I could see the rest of the litter, and I swear that if all three were not sold I STILL would have chosen the one that was still for sale! The other two looked completely different! They were mostly white, with brown ears and a few other brown areas, and no black at all. They also looked almost exactly alike! I assumed later, but didn’t ask, that the same person had decided to take both of them and leave the “oddball” out. The “oddball” however, as I just mentioned, was much cuter and better-looking, in my opinion, than either of the other two! I feared if I left him without making a commitment he’d be sold before I came back for him, so I figured I’d better act now. I paid the $300 and took him home.

He’s mostly black, with white paws. It looks like he has socks on! That was my first reaction, and the reason we named him “Socks!” Afterward I thought that I should have taken a few photos of the other two dogs just to show off the “whole family”, since I had my digital camera with me anyway. But then again hindsight is 20/20, as they say, and of course I never thought about it at the time, and it’s too late now. Socks was introduced to our home and family last night, and is now getting used to his surroundings, his new bed, and the family. BUT WAIT! IT GETS BETTER! We had Socks home for a couple hours when the phone rang! It was my dad. He said “Jimmy! You dog was JUST HERE!” I said “WHAT?!?” He said “He was just on my porch! I went out to get him and he ran off again, across the street between the houses, and now I can’t find him again!” I said I’d be right there, and left in a hurry. I got there in a flash, and walked across the street to look. I saw him!! He was standing in the back of a long driveway right across the street. I called to him and he froze and barked at me. He started running toward me, got fairly close, then immediately looked surprised like he didn’t know who I was (it was pretty dark out), barked some more and darted away, running under a porch. I crawled under the porch, but he wasn’t there. He must have gone out the other side of the steps, which was open. I called and called, looking around for another two hours, very frustrated. It was like he vanished into thin air! I had heard his tags, so I knew he still had them, but after he ran I heard nothing any more. He couldn’t walk without jingling them, so after hearing nothing for so long my dad and I both figured he must have a warm place to sleep and he’s already curled up for the night. Reluctantly, I gave up again and went home without him. I wasn’t feeling so good, having been outside so much the last few days in the cold in only a sweater (I know, I’m an idiot–just can’t bring myself to dig out the winter coat and face the fact that winter is here). I had a bad cold now, head’s all stuffed up, and was so frustrated I had to give up looking yet another time! I did though, and again I left the gate open for him, just in case. Very little sleep again last night, thinking, wondering, and half-dreaming both good and bad scenarios.

I called in to work, intending on staying home to rest, but it bugged the heck out of me that he’s still out there somewhere. This morning was colder than the others, and there was a thick coat of ice on all of my car windows, I could tell just looking out the window. As the sun rose I thought about the kids in my dad’s neighborhood all walking to school, and that maybe Peanut would be rustled from wherever he’s sleeping and be walking around somewhere. I hopped in the car and drove to my dad’s again. I walked the neighborhood for about an hour, covering a block in each direction and Lincoln Park, on his corner. I was about to give up and I walked back to my dad’s house. I stood on his porch, worn out again, and losing hope one more time. I stood there, looking out off the porch and just yelled “PEANUT!” and heard a rustle in the leaves. I yelled it again, and again another rustle. I looked under my dad’s wheelchair ramp, where I had heard the noise. There, behind my dad’s backyard fence was Peanut!!! He was trying to get through, but the fence surrounds the yard and only opens on the opposite side at the car gate. Excited, I went around the house in the other direction calling for Peanut. He heard me the other way and ran around the house. I sat down in the driveway. He walked halfway to the driveway and stopped again, ready to change direction and run once more. I calmed him a little by talking to him, but when I moved in the slightest he became nervous and darted back where he was, around the back of the house, and back to the dead-end on the other side. He was in the perfect spot to catch though–it was only a path about 3 feet wide with only one exit–where I was standing. I walked toward him as he tried to claw through the fence somehow. I talked nice, and after a few minutes he seemed to give up and came to me slowly, as if giving up. I picked him up and petted him, and he seemed calm, and then switched to excited and started crying and whining in excitement. I took him into my dad’s house and he went for the food and water as expected. He was very excited, I imagine to be in a warm home again, and to be with family. I couldn’t wait to bring him home! He didn’t know it yet, but he now had a new brother to live with!! He’s home now, and he’s played most of the morning with Socks, and they get along just perfectly! Peanut’s showing him “the ropes” and Socks wants to follow Peanut everywhere, just like any little brother would. Right now they’re both passed out, Peanut on an afghan on the couch, Socks in the dog bed on the floor. Peanut is recharging from surviving in the wild for 2 ice cold days, but he looks perfectly healthy nonetheless. Socks is passed out from the workout Peanut just gave him, but he’ll be up and at him again in a little while, I’m sure. It’s been quite a weekend. We want to thank all of you who prayed with us for Peanut’s safe return, and those who offered to donate to the reward fund for his return. Thanks to your prayers and efforts he’s home safe and sound, and now we also have a new family member!

PT Cruiser Block Party

Well, summer is pretty much over.  The weather is cooling down and fall is in the air. We got a 2002 PT Cruiser from Frank Boucher in Racine last Christmas!  Sort of a Christmas gift for Sandy and I from ourselves, except SHE gets to drive it 99% of the time… And we just got back from Chrysler’s PT Block Party last night.  4 free tickets to Great America we just couldn’t pass up!  We had a great time too! Take a look.  Let’s see… what else happened since my last blog… OH!  Peanut’s new too!  He’s our new Chihuahua puppy.  Kevin’s godfather, Rich had male and female Chihuahuas and they had a litter of pups!  He was nice enough to give us first pick, so we chose a male.  He looked like a peanut, so that’s what we named him! We have some newborn photos of him as well as plenty of photos of him at every stage of growth up to now.  He’s not full size yet, and looks a bit short and fat when he goes back to his family to visit.  His twin brother Howard is much taller and skinnier, yet they say he eats like a horse!  He’s doing good, but just now learning to NOT chew on everything in the house, and instead sticking mainly to his own chew toys.   That’s about it for the significant stuff I think.  If not, I’ll post more in the next blog entry.  For a “visual” update of things more often though, be sure to check our Photo Albums page once in a while.  I post photos much more often than blog entries, so you should check there first for updates.  I also send regular e-mail updates to everyone who visits my site on a regular basis, so if you want to be added to the list, please let me know.

Fall wrap-up

Winter is fast approaching.  We had a good Halloween.  We considering skipping it this year, what with all the Terrorism and Anthrax scares going around, but then we figured Kevin is at that age (3), and we shouldn’t deprive him of all the fun.  We were just more careful this time.  It turned out well too–He had a blast Trick-or-Treating as “Blue” from Blue’s Clues, and loved all of the other costumes. We carved pumpkins a couple weeks before Halloween and had a lot of fun with that too.  Matthew did a great job carving a Dracula Pumpkin, and I helped Kevin do his, and carved a bat pumpkin for Sandy and I.  The seeds were even good!  Sandy goes in for her oral surgery next week.  She’ll be having all of her teeth pulled and dentures put in (6 weeks later).  She’s very nervous, and not looking forward to it at all. Who would? Anyway, we also attended a nice benefit for Terry (Sandy used to care for him when she was nursing) and they raised a lot of money to get him a new van….  Pam & Louie got married!!!…. And lastly, Sandy’s cousin Debbie’s daughter Heidi had a baby girl–Jade.

You’ve probably read it on every other website before, but so what: Our hearts go out to all of those effected by the 9/11 disasters, and we pray for those lost, and those who lost loved ones.  I was at work that day, and kept thinking that it was one of those days where I’ll remember every single thing that occurred, as if it were yesterday.  Someone from the office went out and bought a television and brought it into the conference room so everyone could get a glimpse of what was happening that day.  I just had that sinking feeling, the kind that just makes you sick to your stomach, and you just know that the events of this one specific day in  history is going to change the world forever.  Just thinking about the impact it will have makes you feel this way.  I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone, but unfortunately on 9/11 millions of people got a taste of it and will be forever changed.  God Help Us All.

Smith Reunion

It’s been a nice summer… We attended the J.W. Smith family reunion at the end of July, toured the Jelly Belly plant a couple times, and even went to the Fireside Dinner Theater for dinner and a play.  The dinner was excellent, it’s unbelievable how good every single item was, and the play was also very good, as was the service and everything else about the Fireside–except for the high prices of the items in the gift shops–but this is to be expected, so it was no surprise.  The family reunion was very nice too.  The reunion was in Fennimore, Wisconsin, but we spent a couple nights at a hotel in Mineral Point, which is about 22 miles south of Fennimore, but the closest hotel we could get that had an indoor pool.  That’s one of our prerequisites to a vacation trip–we all love swimming.  Anyway, the trip went very well except for an initial glitch which wound us up in the middle of a corn field thanks to the wonderful directions given to us by MapQuest! (You’ll notice no hyperlink is given–I no longer recommend them)  I will use Yahoo Maps for my directions in the future.  It has already proven itself, and also CORRECTLY planned our Fennimore trip, which I checked as soon as we returned.

Steakouts, Kevin sprouts, and vows

We’ve had a couple of our famous “SteakOuts” already this year, and it’s been fun.  More are coming, and we can’t wait!

Kevin continues to sprout, and he’s talking more each day.  Sometimes it’s pretty hard to shut him up at all!  But it’s great fun watching the changes.  Sunday we were at Dad T’s for dinner we were just sitting around doing nothing and Kevin was sitting at the end of the dining room table playing with his toys… There’s a phone at the end of the table, and suddenly it rang.  Kevin immediately picked it up without hesitation and said “Hello?”  Our jaws just dropped in shock! We didn’t know he knew how to answer the phone, he had never made any attempt to do this before, and he usually refuses when we ask if he wants to talk to mommy or daddy when we’re on the phone.  We let him stay on for a minute, and he acted like he was actually having a conversation, but he wouldn’t say who it was for.  I said “well, maybe it’s for HIM.”  So we took the phone from him and talked to the caller and it was actually for Clayton I think.  Anyway, that was a first for him, and it was pretty amusing for us.

We attended Mark Stricklin’s Renewal of Wedding Vows party on Saturday, May 5th.  This entire party was a surprise 22nd anniversary gift for his wife, complete with the original wedding party and a new wedding ring. They even had an instant photo booth in Singapore which I used to take a bunch of pictures with the digital. Take a look.

Spring is here

Spring is here! It’s warming up off-and-on around here. In the 70’s yesterday, but extremely windy.  We had a chance to wash one of the cars and go to the park with Kevin, and just spent as much of the day outside as we could.  By the end of the day Kevin was exhausted and cranky.  We have a lot of new photos online now, just in time for spring.  They’re in an album called “Spring 2001”.  You can get to them through our photo albums section or just by clicking here.

Since our last update we have switched from MSN Dial-up to RoadRunner Cable Internet.  WOW, what a difference!  We’re always connected now, no dialing up, and we were able to get rid of our second phone line, which was used just for the computer.  This alone saved us the difference in price between MSN and RoadRunner, so it was definitely worth the price for us, especially with the overall increase in speed! I can download a 5MB MP3 in about 30 seconds, and download most programs and updates in less than a minute!  We’re really happy with it.  I’ve also started a comparison chart here on our site to compare the different speeds.  You can see the results by clicking here, and you can test your own connection and submit your results to me by clicking here.

February Begins

Tomorrow Kevin turns 3 years old! We’re having his party at Bozzo’s house this afternoon.  His party has a dinosaur theme, and he’s getting dinosaur-related gifts.  Sandy and Jim got him the movie Dinosaur on DVD (Special Edition, 2 DVDs), some dinosaur wood puzzles, and a big plastic container filled with all sorts of dinosaurs.

Jim’s using 5 messengers now — MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Odigo, AIM, and ICQ.  Sheesh! It’s not so bad though with 2 PCs on the internet at once–all the messengers stay on one PC and we surf the net and do other things with the other one.  It’s just experimental though, to see how all the programs work and what their differences are.  There’s an alliance forming among several of the major messenger services right now, so hopefully they’ll come up with a good unified solution… In the meantime though, Jim just likes to play with them and juggle between them until they break.

The blue car is in the shop this weekend–another head gasket blown.  That’s the 2nd hard gasket change for that car now, so it’ll be on it’s 3rd gasket. The black car is on it’s 2nd one as well, so I guess it’s just a thing you have to live with on Neons.  We’ve heard it’s a pretty common problem on Neons.

Our CD recorder died last week too. It just stopped refusing to record CDs one day, and then stopped reading CDs altogether. I opened it up, but could see nothing physically wrong with it.  So I’ll have to get another one of those along with a new DVD drive, which has been giving me trouble for some time too. That one occasionally refuses to read DVDs, and never wants to read CDs any more either…Maybe it’s me, but neither one of them wants to work any more no matter what I do.  I’ve even tried them in different computers with the same results. Oh well. Time to upgrade.
